What is a School Psychologist and how can you access the services they provide?
School psychologists are trained in both education and psychology. They deal with a wide range of problems faced by children, parents, teachers, and administrators. Committed to development of the full potential of each child, the psychologist applies knowledge of health and educational issues, academic difficulties, behavioral adjustment, and child development to help children, parents, staff, and the school community in addressing identified needs. School psychologists often help students who may be having learning, behavioral and emotional problems through a comprehensive psycho-educational assessment and intervention. They consult with teachers, parents and administrators aiding them with information and recommendations. School psychologists integrate data from a number of sources in a team approach to problem solving. The training and experience of the school psychologist adds a unique perspective in addressing student needs. Often, school psychologists work directly with students and parents in problem solving and they provide an important consultation role to Student Support Teams (SST) or Individual Education Program (IEP) committees. School psychologists can conduct research to help promote effective forms of learning, discipline, and social interaction. They can conduct parent or school in-service training on a variety of topics.
School psychologists are knowledgeable about a variety of issues including but not limited to behavior management, learning disabilities, assessment, crisis intervention, group and individual counseling, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, state and federal special education regulations, traumatic brain injuries, emotional and behavioral disorders, autism, intellectual disabilities, etc.
