What opportunities exist for psychology interns?
The Carroll County School System serves as a training site for school psychology and clinical psychology graduate students. The system has provided training for specialist and doctoral level psychology interns as well as school psychology practicum students. Interns are carefully selected to ensure appropriate services to children while at the same time providing quality training for future psychologists. All interns are provided with individual supervision from certified or licensed psychologists employed within the Carroll County School System.
The Carroll County School System is a proud member of the Association of Psychology Post-Doctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). APPIC develops standards for quality internship programs and systems must meet a number of criteria for continued membership. Carroll County is one of only a handful of schools in the state of Georgia to have obtained membership in APPIC.
The relatively low psychologist-to-student ratio in the district allows for a comprehensive psychologist role. This affords interns with ample opportunities for a wide range of services to children and adolescents. In terms of supervision, the system employs psychologists certified at the state and national levels as well as the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Each has graduate level training and a number hold doctoral degrees. This provides for a variety of learning opportunities with quality personnel. The program includes extensive individual and small group supervision, as well as didactic experiences.
The primary purpose of the internship program is to develop competent school psychologist practitioners. General objectives include:
- Increasing knowledge of public school organization and operation
- Familiarization with the role and function of the school psychologist
- Effective utilization of community resources
- Development of skills in diagnosis and behavioral analysis
- Development of communication and consultative skills and the ability to engage in teamwork efforts
- Development of skills in intervention and prevention
- Professional growth and development through continued in-service training, observation, and study.
