| The Role of the School's Media Specialist
The building level library/media specialist is responsible for the design and delivery of an effective library media program that includes both the print and technology applicable for both students and faculty. The library/media specialist serves as a link between students, teachers, administrators, and parents and the available information resources. These resources include the print collection in the media center, liaison with the public library, technology resources both on campus and those available through the internet, services purchased though the state and available on-line, and audio/video materials collected and stored within the media center. The roles and services of the media specialist are dynamic; they change and evolve in response to the societal, economic, and technological demands on education.
In the print role, the media specialist orders reference materials that support the curriculum of the system to make sure that up-to-date materials are available for the students to complete assignments. Fiction materials are ordered to encourage students to read not just for assignments but also for pleasure. Class sets of books are ordered and stored for the use of specific classes to support the curriculum. Books are ordered from the public library for both students and faculty through the interlibrary loan system and the bookmobile service. The media specialist plans special events that promote reading such as Read Across America and National Book Week. The media specialist instructs students on the use of the library collection, and reinforces the instruction of research skills.
In the technology role, the media specialist orders and maintains audio/visual equipment for use in the classroom and the media center. This equipment ranges from overhead projectors, multi-media projectors, CD players, wave recorders, video cameras, digital still cameras, public address systems, and other equipment needed to support the delivery of instruction. The media specialist also orders video materials for specific classes in order to reinforce learning. The video materials are cataloged and held in the media center for check-out for instructors. Many of the schools in Carroll County are on a school wide video delivery system where the material is kept in the media center but the teacher has control of the playback from the classroom. The media specialist is also available to instruct on the use of the equipment or software to both faculty and students in order to best utilize the collection. Any burned out bulbs, general maintenance, and minor repair is done by the media center personnel. Major repair is arranged by the Media Specialist.
The interrelationship of the library/media center to the instructional program must be of primary importance. The collaboration between the faculty and the media specialist is a necessary part to ensure instruction in the classroom is rigorous and challenging. The classroom teacher and the media specialist work for the same goal, to provide premier learning environments offering exceptional opportunities to all students. With the idea of the media center being the hub of the school, the media specialist plays an important role in helping to raise student achievement. Our tradition is teaching, learning, and caring! |
