Carroll County Schools and Southwire Company partnered to form a program called 12 for Life that offers students the opportunity to attend class and work at real jobs in a Southwire manufacturing facility. All students enrolled must be 16 years old, pass a drug screening, be selected by graduation coaches, counselors, or the program administrator as needing additional support to complete high school.

Students work regular hours, earning actual wages while learning skills they will need after they graduate. The 12 for Life plant works on three daily, four-hour shifts, which are supervised by Southwire personnel. Students perform manufacturing jobs and learn other support jobs, such as shipping, quality assurance, and data entry. Bus transportation is available for those who need it at a minimal round-trip fee.

Students receive school credits for both the classroom component and work portion of the program. A student may earn 2 units of credit per semester toward required elective classes. Students will be expected to work one Saturday each month while employed in the 12 for Life program. The plant operates during the summer which requires student participation. Upon successful completion of 12 for Life and earning a high school diploma, a student will be placed on a preferred hiring list for Southwire Company.

Interested students should see their school counselor or graduation coach to complete an application for the program.
